Special 15th Century Medieval Rondel Dagger This fine medieval Rondel dagger is one of the most interesting and exquisite objects in the collection. This high craftmanship and the presence of the Fleur De Lis subtly added to the floral motifs point to it being made in Italy or Spain. Made for a Nobleman Or high ranking individual, the subtle details of the hilt give the pieces that flair, sheathed the dagger would have held a special secret, a multi faceted blade. This type of blade configuration is quiet rare and rarely seen. The hilt is comprised of a solid ebony grip with a rounded guard which is embellished with floral motifs and the Fleur De Lis. This design also flows into the lower blade of the pommel cap. The cap itself is the crowning point of the piece having a battle scene and arms and armour, the remains of gold gilding is also visible. The grip and the pommel display looseness and the pommel is canted, which coincided with the dagger have been used in combat. This evidence coupled with the bend in tip is excellent proof that this dagger has a special story to tell. This type of dagger was primarily designed to be used for trusting / stabbing and attacking downed armoured knight by striking through the eye slits, groan, arm pits and other key areas. The blade is a well preserved and we should note, the level of skill required to form the blade while still retaining its strength show sign of mastery in the arm of blade smiting.
