16th Century English Tudor Stiletto SOLD This special English misericordia stiletto from the Tudor era. These kinds of daggers would have been the companion of every knight, and this one was certainly made for a wealth individual. The etchings are a clear indication of their allegiance. The script etched into the surface is mostly illegible however the words “hell” and “1553” are clearly visible. These kid of mottos were commonly engraved or etched on weapons, they where charms and in many instances referred to the poor souls these weapons sent to the afterlife. The date “1553” is probably an important date, many things happened in 1553, the main being the ascension of Mary I the daughter of Henry VIII. She became queen in July 1553. This adds a lot more intrigue into such a unique dagger from a crucial point in history. We can estimate the dagger is from the first quarter to the mid 16th century. Constructed with all metal parts the dagger is etched through out with floral motifs, cartouches and cross hatches. The ricasso is marked on either side of the blade. The blade has extensive signs of use and the tip plays signs it has disformed likely from using it to pry or stabbing.
