There are two main types: 伝統こけし (Traditional Kokeshi): Folk art dolls from the Tohoku region, originating in the late Edo period and crafted using time-honored techniques passed from master to apprentice. 創作こけし (Creative Kokeshi): Modern interpretations shaped by the artist’s own vision, using original methods. This style gained popularity after WWII in 1947, and since 1954, the Prime Minister’s Award has honored exceptional Creative Kokeshi artworks.
